Event History - 1

How it all began …………………………

Soon after moving to Denmead in 2000, I met Mike Bartholomew, who like me, enjoys cycling and sailing.
Mike is chairman of Langstone Sailability, a charity that helps disabled people go sailing,
and is based at Langstone Sailing Club.

Together we thought it would be a good idea to run a cycle ride and raise money for Langstone Sailability.
We enlisted the help of Danny Gavin, another keen cyclist and the 3 of us set up a committee,
then set the wheels in motion (no pun intended).

First Year – 2001

That first year, the cycle ride was due to take place towards the end of March.

It was planned to be just a ride starting and ending at the Harvest Home pub in Denmead, with the permission of the then landlord and landlady, Geoff and Georgia.

Unfortunately, the foot and mouth epidemic put paid to running the event in March, and so it was put back to July, where it has remained.

Moving to July gave us the opportunity to organise some additional outdoor activities, such as entertainment and a BBQ.

About 80 cyclists took part, but many more people from the village came along to support the event, which was a great success with over £5000 being raised for Langstone Sailability.
